Common and Proper Nouns
Nouns are words that stand for a person, place, thing, or idea. They can be singular (one) or plural (more than one).
Common nouns do not need to begin with a capital letter.
A proper noun is a name given to a specific person, place, or thing. Proper nouns begin with capital letters.
Each sentence below contains two nouns. They are either both common nouns or both proper nouns. Underline the nouns and then indicate whether they are common or proper. The answers for the first two sentences are done for you.
1. It’s not a good idea to eat green beef. common
2. Is Philadelphia larger than Pittsburgh? proper
3. Florida is just south of Georgia.
4. Your shoes are on the wrong feet.
5. I noticed that she always put pepper on her toast.
6. Shall we eat at Denny’s or Pizza Hut?
7. We will drive a Buick or a Ford.
8. The dog refuses to eat those meatballs.
9. You made Danielle and Laura angry!
10. These cups are better than broken glasses.
11. Is there a poisonous snake in your pocket?
12. Daryl works for Motorola.
